Why massage your horse?

  • Improves circulation. Massage pumps and presses circulation into areas that are congested, helping them receive better nourishment, oxygenation, and hydration this optimises healing and healthy muscle development.
  • It also helps the lymphatic system by helping to eliminate waste and toxins and reduce fluid build-up.
  •  Increased flexibility and range of motion. Massage can release tension and trigger points in the muscles and fascia resulting in suppleness allowing the horse to increase its range of motion.
  • Pain and stress relief. Massage helps with the release of endorphins which act as a natural analgesic this can alleviate soreness and other discomforts. A hormone called oxytocin is also released which increases the level of dopamine and serotonin this all helps to release anxiety and stress and gives a lasting sense of wellbeing.
  • Aids healing. Massage helps the immune system by increasing the levels of white blood cells which help attack viruses and bacteria.
  • Injury prevention. Massage helps keep your horses’ muscles strong and healthy.
  • It increases tissue elasticity by lengthening and toning muscle fibres which in turn prevents injury.

Why use Kinesiology Tape (K Tape) on your horse?

Why do we use Kinesiology and what benefits can we expect?

There are many different ways that 'K Tape' can be applied to achieve different results. On application it acts like a second skin.

Here are some of the main benefits:

  • Increases circulation
  • Reduces muscle fatigue
  • Relieves pain and soreness
  • Helps with fascia restrictions and keeps fascia healthy
  • Reduces inflammation and swelling
  • Supports and stabilises joints, tendons and ligaments
  • Helps the removal of toxin build up
  • Improves range of motion
  • Facilitates healing
  • Can help relax or activate muscles
  • Helps with proprioception and re-educating the neuromuscular system

If you think that your horse could benefit from a K-Tape application or if you would like to learn more about how to use K-Tape please contact us

Why stretch your horse?

A programme of regular stretching is a vital part of caring and achieving the best for your horse. Regular stretching can help ensure that its musculo-skeletal system stays healthy and supple. For any athlete involved in exercise it would be unthinkable to begin training without mobilising and stretching the joints before and after exercise and your horse is no different. A regular stretching routine is the best preventive advantage that you can give your horse. There are many benefits of passive stretching including:

  • Improves posture and ‘top-line’ Increases the horse’s range of movement
  • Improves performance
  • Improves lateral movements and stride length
  • Reduces warm up time
  • Prevents injury
  • Reduces tension and resistance in the muscles
  • Gently lengthens and stretches scar tissue
  • Reduces muscle stiffness after a workout

Booking a Therapy Session

Have you noticed that your horse is not performing as well as they have done in the past? Is your horse displaying signs of discomfort when being exercised, napping, bucking, rearing or bolting?   Has your horse developed a reluctance to be tacked up or even to come to you to be caught in the paddock?   These may all be signs that your horse has restrictions in their muscles and fascia and is therefore experiencing discomfort, pain and possibly compensatory locomotion.   Some horses may even appear lame due to fascia and muscular tension as they begin to use their bodies differently to avoid using the contracted muscle.  If this all sounds familiar then your horse will certainly benefit from a massage therapy session. Even if you're not experiencing any issues a regular massage therapy is the best preventative treatment you can give your horse.   I use a variety of methods including, hands on massage, trigger point therapy, fascia release and muscle energy release technique and each session is tailored to meet your horses individual needs. Please call or message me to arrange an initial consultation.

About me

I have been passionately interested in horses from an early age. I started riding at 11 years old and haven’t stopped since. I have owned my own Irish Sports Horse, competing locally in dressage, show jumping and clinics. Following suspensory ligament diagnosis and treatment I managed her rehabilitation back to fitness which sparked my interest in equine convalescence and how owners can help reduce injury through massage and stretching programmes. After qualifying as a registered equine massage therapist, I started my own equine massage therapy business and treat horses from ‘happy hackers’ to professional competition horses.

I am a qualified and registered member of the International Institute of Animal Therapists (IAAT) and am fully insured.
