The Ridden Horse Pain Ethogram

The Ridden Horse Pain Ethogram (RHpE) is a tool used to identify musculoskeletal pain in horses when they are ridden. Dr Sue Dyson lists 24 specific behaviours that are more likely to be seen in horses experiencing pain under saddle. Studies have shown that a horse who shows 8 or more of the 24 behaviours listed in the ridden horse pain ethogram is likely to have musculoskeletal pain.
